Global Women Chief Executive Officer, Katie Bhreatnach, has released the following statement in response to Government’s Pay Equity Changes urgently passed on May 6th 2025:
“As an organisation committed to equity and equality for all, we believe that meaningful progress relies not only on good intentions, but on sound, inclusive process. When it comes to pay equity reform, the way we make decisions matters just as much as the decisions themselves.
“Rushing changes through without adequate consultation risks undermining the integrity of the process and the trust of those it most affects — particularly women. Equity isn’t achieved through shortcuts. It requires careful listening, thoughtful engagement, and transparency at every step.
“We are concerned that the amendments were made without sufficient input or scrutiny, and may unintentionally disadvantage women and limit their opportunity to be heard. This risks long-term implications for gender pay equity in Aotearoa, where the pay gap remains at 8.2%.
“While we acknowledge the government’s intent to streamline legislation, we believe a more measured approach that includes robust participation from all voices could ensure a better outcome.
“Aotearoa has a proud history of leadership on gender equity. Upholding that legacy means ensuring the decisions we make — and how we make them — reflect the values we stand for.”
