It was with a sense of appreciation and hope that Global Women convened our Annual General Meeting for 2024. Following last year’s AGM, we have evaluated and adjusted the shape of the organisation, a decision which has been positively reflected in our overall performance. It is within this context that we recognise our achievements, acknowledging that they are the result of our collective efforts, and take pride in our shared success.
We also acknowledge the Global Women Board, and are delighted to welcome our newest appointments to the Board: Sarah Baddeley, Katie Bhreatnach, Andy Blair and Vanisa Dhiru.
“This is an amazing opportunity to influence how women in leadership can contribute to our social and economic prosperity.”
– Sarah Baddeley, Partner: Martin Jenkins, Global Women Board member.
This year has unfolded with a mix of progress and persistent challenges for women in Aotearoa New Zealand. The gender pay gap, though slightly narrowed to 8.6%, continues to show stark disparities for Māori and Pacific women, with gaps of 14.3% and 15.2% respectively. These figures underscore the urgent need for targeted interventions to address these inequities.
However, there is plenty of reason to celebrate! Women are making their mark in political leadership, with a remarkable 48.7% representation in Parliament. This signals a shift towards a more inclusive political landscape. Yet, in the world of business, the glass ceiling remains frustratingly high. Only six women lead NZX50 companies, with five of them proudly part of the Global Women network.
Through it all, the Global Women Trust has been a beacon of change, empowering women at every stage of their leadership journey.
“Me aro koe ki te hā o Hineahuone. Driving better outcomes for all wāhine in Aotearoa honours the legacy of the wāhine toa who came before us, and those that will follow as we strive to be good ancestors. “
– Katie Bhreatnach, Director, Global Women Board member.
Global Women welcomed 41 new members in 2023, both enriching our diversity and expanding our reach. Our flagship programmes, Breakthrough Leaders and Activate, continue to equip women with the skills and confidence to rise to leadership positions.
The Champions for Change, a powerful coalition of influential CEOs and Chairs, continues to champion gender balance within organisations. Their commitment to achieving a 40/40/20 gender balance across management levels reflects a shared vision for a more inclusive workplace.
“We move forward when we champion women’s voices, acknowledging their contributions and recognising their leadership in every sector.” – Vanisa Dhiru, Director & Public Speaker, Global Women Board
Global Women’s advocacy work remains strong, with the #EightpercentMatters campaign raising awareness about the persistent gender pay gap. The organisation also collaborates with partners to conduct research and advocate for policy changes.
As we look towards the future, the journey continues. Global Women remains committed to its vision of a thriving Aotearoa where remarkable women are leading our communities, businesses, and nation. The challenges remain, but with continued collaboration, dedication, and a shared sense of purpose, we can build a future where women and girls are truly empowered to reach their full potential.
“We don’t have to change the whole world, just the worlds we live and work in.” – Andy Blair, Director Business & Innovation: Upflow, Global Women Board
