Breakthrough Leaders 2024: Navigating the Political Landscape

In the heart of Wellington, a group of Global Women Breakthrough Leaders, including myself, embarked on a two-day Experience designed to challenge our perceptions, engage with influential leaders, and explore the intricacies of political and social dynamics. This Experience, part of the Global Women Breakthrough Leaders programme, was not just another leadership retreat; it was a journey into the heart of New Zealand’s political landscape, and a deep dive into the art of finding middle ground amidst diversity.

Day One of the Experience demonstrated the power of inquiry. The day commenced with an enlightening session led by Meena Kadri, which introduced us to three powerful questions: “I like…”, “I wonder…”, and “I wish…”. These questions, simple yet profound, have now become a staple in my professional kete. The day progressed with a series of engaging discussions. featuring a diverse panel including the Mayor of Wellington, a former Governor-General and Lady, and influential figures in sports — each bringing unique perspectives on leadership, resilience, and social change.

“One of the most pivotal lessons I took away from the Experience was the importance of listening across differences.”

The following day took us to the very heart of New Zealand’s political arena — Parliament. There, in the halls of power, we were privy to the insights of female leaders from both the government and opposition, as well as CEOs of government departments. Sitting in the public gallery, observing the tumultuous yet fascinating discourse during question time, was an unnerving experience that highlighted the complexities of governance and representation.

One of the most pivotal lessons I took away from the Experience was the importance of listening across differences. Amidst the discord of diverse opinions and heated debates, the ability to recognise the humanity in each other and build bridges through conversation became evident. This Experience underscored the potential for communication to surpass boundaries, fostering mutual understanding and respect.

Participating in the Global Women Breakthrough Leaders programme has been an extraordinary opportunity to broaden my perspective on leadership and societal change. Guided by the wisdom of Dame Jenny Shipley and other thought leaders, the programme has challenged me to rethink traditional leadership models and consider how past and present dynamics can shape a hopeful future. Through this lens, the Experience in Wellington was not just an event but a milestone in my personal and professional development.

“Witnessing the emerging talent among young female leaders in politics and beyond has reinforced my belief in the potential for positive change.”

The programme’s emphasis on gender equity, intergenerational wisdom, and the role of leadership in nation-building has inspired me to envision a future where organisational structures support self-determination and collective progress. It has encouraged me to ask difficult questions, explore new perspectives, and trust in my ability to contribute to meaningful change.

Reflecting on the Experience, I am filled with hope and determination. Witnessing the emerging talent among young female leaders in politics and beyond has reinforced my belief in the potential for positive change. Despite the challenges posed by our current systems and the often-toxic nature of social media, the Experience has equipped me with the tools and insights needed to engage constructively in the political and social spheres.

The Wellington Experience was more than an educational experience, it was a transformative journey that has shaped my understanding of leadership, politics, and the power of collective action. As I continue to participate in the Global Women Breakthrough Leaders programme, I am grateful for the opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute to building a more equitable and vibrant future for Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond.
