Sue Bidrose

Sue was Dunedin City Council’s first woman CEO, a position she held and loved from 2013 until mid 2020. By the time she left, she had spent 15 years in Local Government – 10 years at Dunedin and the 5 years prior at Waitakere City Council in Auckland. Earlier positions included work in research, policy and delivery at the Ministry of Social Development, and many years in the not-for-profit sector, particularly working with young people and in mental health. In the middle of that she did a doctorate in Psychology, looking at the impact of trauma on young children’s development. Her first job out of school, though, was a laboratory technician looking at metabolic diseases of dairy cattle, which set the ground for her return to the Agri-science sector in July, when she joined AgResearch, incidentally as the first woman CEO of any of the seven Crown Research Institutes. She is was recently elected as Chair of Science New Zealand, the central body that supports and champions the work of the CRIs and Callaghan Innovation.
