Waikato taniwha rau, he piko he taniwha, he piko he taniwha. The Waikato winds through Kirikiriroa, and at every bend stands a leader. No bend holds the river. Each one receives the water, shapes its course and sends it on.
That is the leadership we gather to explore in 2027: leadership that endures because it is handed on. Tuakana teina sits at the centre of this hui. Each of us is tuakana to someone and teina to someone else, and the strength of our network lies in how well we carry one another forward.
We open with pōwhiri and a welcome to the whenua, then gather at Zealong Tea Estate. In 1996 its founder imported 1,500 tea cuttings, a crop nobody had grown successfully in this country. Only 130 survived quarantine. Every one of the 1.2 million plants on the estate today descends from them. Patient work, passed down, still bearing harvest.
Come to reflect, reconnect, and leave with enduring relationships that lasts well beyond two days.
