Matariki 2017

Matariki ahunga nui*

Join Global Women and Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei to celebrate Matariki at Auckland’s Ōrākei Marae.

As a harvest festival, Matariki is about preparing for the future and reflecting on the past. For the Global Women community, it’s an opportunity to think about the steps already taken to create a more diverse and inclusive New Zealand—and to prepare for the work that is yet to come.

To celebrate Matariki, we’ll be coming together to:

  • see the Matariki constellation in the eastern sky and watch the sun rise
  • learn about the significance of Matariki from Auckland’s Ahi Kaa, Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei
  • share kai (food) at our Matariki breakfast, and
  • make an investment in the whenua (land) and future generations with a tree planting ceremony.

Places for this unique event are very limited, so be sure to secure your ticket as soon as possible.

* Translates literally to “Matariki when many mounds heaped up.” The mounds were heaped up at Matariki in preparation for kūmara planting—in the same way that we now work together to prepare New Zealand for a more diverse and inclusive future.
