Joan has spent over 25 years working in the media industry holding CEO positions in both newspaper and radio, and has been a professional director for 18 years. Her current governance roles include Chair of Mighty River Power, Chair of TVNZ and director of ANZ NZ.
In July 2005, Joan became chief executive officer of Fairfax New Zealand Limited, New Zealand’s largest media company, a role from which she retired in 2009.
She left high school with School Certificate for a job as a bank teller. After spending time at home after the birth of her son, Joan forged a career as a media executive eventually holding CEO roles in major media organisations.
Joan is a Trustee of The Tindall Foundation and the Louise Perkins Foundation, and a member of the Treasury Advisory Board.
She holds a Masters in Business Administration from University of Auckland. She is also a University of Auckland Distinguished Alumni (2015). Joan is the author of "A Girl's Guide to Business" which was published by Penguin Books in 1998.
She won the New Zealand Shareholders Beacon Award in 2014 and the CAANZ Media Excellence Award in 2009. She was a finalist in the Chairman of the Year Deloitte Management Awards in 2011 and 2012.
Fiona was appointed Head of Investments for the Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation in September 2011. She oversees a portfolio of private equity, private equity real estate, and active return investments. Fiona also chairs the Investment Committee for the Guardians.
On her return to New Zealand in 2009, Fiona joined NZX as Head of Traded Products and then Head of Markets.
Whilst in the United States, Fiona worked within Morgan Stanley’s Institutional Equities Division in New York and then San Francisco. She holds a Masters of Business Administration from Columbia Graduate School of Business (New York). Prior to business school she worked with Credit Suisse in New York as part of their e-commerce product development team then the Office of the CFO until 2004.
In her early career Fiona was a Senior Tax Advisor with Deloitte in Auckland. She holds a BCom (Accounting) / LLB from Otago University.
